We get by with a little help from our friends.

Some of the ways you can help a friend.

Some of the ways you can help a friend.

Let me tell you about my friend Sarah.

She is amazing. She is fun and funny and fan-freaking-tabulous company. Actually, scrap funny. What I mean is  hilarious.

She is also mega smart. Like super dooper rock your socks off clever. So clever in fact that she is currently completing her Master of Clinical Psychology.

Specifically she is having a bit of a squiz at Continue reading

I hope we don’t have to take our clothes off and touch each others chakras.

This came up when I put in "group meditation". Who knows...maybe they are meditating?

This came up when I put in “group meditation”. Who knows…maybe they are meditating?

I went to a group meditation the other day. My first thought when I go to one of these events is usually am I going to get talked into joining some hippy cult by a bunch of crazies? You know the type where we all take our clothes off and touch each other’s chakras. You think I’m overreacting but I’m not.

This actually happened to a friend of mine recently at a local ‘personal empowerment’ course. For those that don’t know there is a chakra right in the pubic area and yes there was touching of the stranger’s nudie bits after the underdressing. At the end of the course they invited everyone to go along and do a sex course as the next stage of their ‘personal development’. My “friend” was invited by his new lesbian course buddy who thought it would take her more out of her comfort zone to do it with a dude. My friend declined but then hinted maybe I’d go with him when he told me this story. I declined. So you see, I’m hardly overreacting. This region is hippie heartland I tell you.

So clearly I have my misgivings about all this shit Continue reading

Keeping up with my WordPress reader

blogI don’t know about you but I am waaaaaaay behind on my blog reading this week. I don’t know if everyone posted more or I read less but at last count there are about 100 emails in my inbox with blog posts I am yet to read from this week. So if I normally read and comment on your posts and you haven’t seen me, well now you know why!

But I’m here and I’m trying (I’ve been playing read blogs and FAST all morning) and I’m here to get the tips people Continue reading

30 Day Meditation Challenge Update – Week 2

meditation mindfull

I’m actually starting to feel like my mind is more like the pic to the right! Yay!

I’m feeling pretty awesome about my achievement today. At the time of writing this post I’ve managed to meditate for a minimum of 10 mins per day for the last 14 days. Pretty cool eh? I’m most impressed with myself. What I’m more impressed about is the positive impact I feel it is having on my life, particularly my mood. Parenting is a tough gig as anyone will tell you and as the kids jump up and down on your buttons it can get harder and harder to hold it in and not break the good dinner set or smash your head into the wall. But since meditating I feel my breaking point has shifted.

Do I still get irritated? Of course. Continue reading

#OS Blog – Old School Blog

So the rockin’ chick of awesomeness over at How To Ruin A Toddlers Day assigned me some homework this week.

Well she didn’t call it that. She called it linking up to the Old School Blogging party but that is code for homework. Kidding. It’s fun fun fun and reminds me of those old emails you used to send around to your friends answering quetsions about yourself. Quite self involved really but no one every seemed to care about that.

So this is the crazy five edition which means there are 5 questions in each category. At the end you  link up to Elaine, of the Miss Elaine-ous Life who originated the idea. So you go to her page and follow the instructions. Cool hey! This one is for the month of July so I better get my skates on.

5 Reasons Co-Sleeping with a Toddler SUCKS

cosleepingI’m not a big co-sleeper. I’ve done it and still do it on occasion but I am far from its biggest fan. In fact, after every co-sleeping event I usually declare that I won’t ever be doing that again thank you very much and my son gets a stern but loving lecture on how he needs to sleep in his bed while mummy sleeps in her bed.

Anyway, last night it was so freaking cold that when Monkey woke for the second time at just after 4am I just didn’t have the heart to say no. He held his little hands out to me and said in the cutest sad voice ever “This way mummy, this way” and I did not even hesitate.

Boy did I regret it once we got back to my bed. Co-sleepers: I don’t know how you do it. Get off those crazy pills and get your sleep back*! Sheesh.

Here are the reasons I hate co-sleeping: Continue reading

To routine or not to routine? What we did with our baby.

Rachel sleep sleep

Click on me and I’ll zoom you on over to my story.

So you’ve clawed your way through the first few months of parenting. Congratulations! You deserve a big pat on the back and a large glass of wine. Except you don’t feel like you do.

You think it should be getting easier but it’s not. Baby sleeps less in the day and wakes up more at night and you think maybe it’s time you checked into the crazy house as you aren’t sure what the hell is going on. Why isn’t it working?

That’s about where I was at when Monkey was 4 months old. And it went on like that for almost another 2 months before I made some changes. I’ve written our full story as a guest post for You and Baby so head on over and check it out.

It’s a good read. I promise. And it may even help you!

Pssssst if you click on the cute baby pic (yes that’s my monkey) he’ll shoot you right on over there.

Leibster Award

liebsterI am ashamed to say that of all the awards  I coveted this one the most. Why? I think because it was the first “blog award” that I ever saw when I started blogging regularly. Gasp, there are blog awards???? I wonder if I’ll ever get one of those. That one was awarded to the delightful Miss Fanny P who deserved it and then some (check out her blog if you don’t believe me). I ogled it and envied her and looked at how amazing and funny she was and wondered wistfully if that would ever be me.

Well rock on dudes and dudettes cause it IS ME! Yay! And not only have I been awarded this prestigious award BUT (and sit down for this) I’ve received it FIVE TIMES in the last couple of weeks. Whoah! I know, it’s amazing right. Are you still standing? Are you proud of me? Because I’m proud of me. Continue reading

Photo Fables – the story behind the picture

Click me to read the photo fable.

Click me to read the photo fable.

I think this is one of the loveliest things a stranger has ever done for me. I recently followed the FortunateArtist blog as I thought this idea of Photo Fables sounded really cool. Then all of a sudden an email appeared in my inbox from the lovely Finn saying how she’d love to write a fable for me. I don’t know how she finds the time and keeps up with them all but I’m so glad she does as the result is AMAZING.  Please head over to Finn’s website and check out her work. Her About page is beautifully written and tells the story of how Photo Fables began.

So this is the photo I sent her. I told her no background at all (she prefers it that way). Interestingly the fable was more accurate to the truth than you could imagine. The photo was taken at Angkor Wat in Cambodia in 2008 where I spent most the year. I had been aching to get back to this country after a visit in 2004. I wanted to spend more time there and do something to help its most wonderful people. I have been back visiting a number of times since and to this day my heart aches for it just a little. It is my other “home” in the world and I think this fable perfectly captures that. Click on the pic to zoom over and read the gorgeous fable. PLEASE. Finn’s efforts deserve a viewing.
