Dr Joshi’s Holistic Detox – One month on

Dr Joshi's Book

Dr Joshi’s Book.

Back in January I decided to do something crazy being the new year and all and deprive myself of a good portion of almost everything I normally eat for 21 days. It was all in the name of detox Dr Joshi’s alkalising body detox to be exact.

Dr Joshi and I don’t actually know each other but as this is not my first run around his deprivation course I feel like we are old friends. I have actually kept a few of his little detox eating habits from the first time we hung out so I was really interested to see what my take homes would be from this time around. I thought one month after the end would be a good time to check out what has stuck and what hasn’t. Continue reading

Snacks without dairy your kids will love

Hey I’m back with more dairy free goodies to make your day. Woooot!  I wish I’d found something like this when Monkey was young. It would have made things soooooo much easier.  This is another of those blogs I’ve posted over at You & Baby. I’ve posted a bunch of our favourite recipes  and also some store bought dairy free snack ideas. Enjoy!

Just click on the (laughable) pic below to zoom you direct to the blog. And yes, I created this myself in paint. Laugh away. I know I’m no graphic designer…don’t even show hints of talent.

no dairy please mummy

Dairy free vege muffins

You know I love a dairy free snack for Monkey. Found this recipe today and whipped it up in no time. Some tips from this end:

  • Next time I would add ham for some extra protein and flavour. If I was going to skip the ham then I’d add mixed herbs and maybe seeds…something with more protein. I thought the end result was a little bland. Monkey however thought no such thing and scoffed them down.
  • I used SR wholemeal flour and skipped the baking powder
  • I used oat milk for our non dairy milk
  • I only had frozen corn and peas so I grated carrot and cut up some beans nice and small. Grated zucchini would also be awesome (we didn’t have any to try)
  • The mixture will seem very very dense. I was tempted to add more milk but held back and was glad I did. It didn’t need the extra liquid.    Continue reading

Rissoles: dairy free, gluten free and egg free and STILL YUMMY!!!!

What’s for dinner at your place tonight? If you are looking for something that is easy to prepare + delicious + healthy then give these rissoles a try. I made them with lamb mince but they’d work just as well with beef or chicken mince. Whatever you have on hand would be a-ok.

They can be dairy free, gluten free AND egg free and STILL DELICIOUS! How awesome is that? My toddler loves them. Click on the pic and it will take you to my recipe post over at the You and Baby blog.

Going dairy free with your child

Eliminating a major element of your child’s diet can seem pretty full on when it’s happening, especially if you’ve never been down the food elimination path before. It’s particularly frightening if the thing that you’re eliminating is life threatening for your child. Fortunately that wasn’t the case for us. We were just dealing with a “suggested” intolerance and to be honest it felt like more a pain in the rear end than anything else at the time.

Coming up with great treats that your kid likes can be pretty tricky and we’d just settled on a bunch of great finger food options (as dear child was refusing to be fed at the time) that included cheese. And let’s face it, dairy features pretty heavily in most kiddie diets. Yoghurt and cheese sticks are a parent’s best friend. Anyway clearly I wasn’t entirely convinced that dairy was the source of our problems when it was all happening but I’m happy to admit that I was wrong.  Yes. I. Was. Wrong. Doing a thorough elimination (which is more than cutting out milk, cheese and butter I’m afraid) helped us so much that we are still dairy free now.

If you want to know more about our story and see some tips on how to make the transition smoothly then check out my guest blog over at You and Baby. Yes I’m guest blogging now! Isn’t that exciting?!  You and Baby have put together a great little blogging team and they are getting their skates on as we speak.  It will be a great resource for all parents and parents-to-be so head on over and check it out. And if you are interested in the dairy free stuff then keep an eye out as I’m going to do some posts with some of our favourite recipes and also some yummy and filling snack ideas to help you out.

Hope you’ve all had a splendid weekend wherever you are!
